OVER THREE THOUSANDSHORT FILMS SUBMITTED FROM THE BEST CINEMA SCHOOLS AROUND THE WORLD. 30 OF THEM HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO TAKE PART IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Lorenzo Mattotti is the author of the tenth edition of the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival’s poster (25-28 March 2020). The Short continues its collaboration with the greatest contemporary Italian illustrators. After Igort and Giorgio Carpinteri, the festival takes advantage of the creativity of Mattotti, following the success of his first (indeed an animation) feature film as director, La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia. Screened in Cannes and Locarno first, then available in our cinemas.
The poster brings together some of the key points of the Short, as conveyed by the author himself: “The ‘look in the camera’, the world as symbol of the international spirit of the festival, the writing as the future in progress of the contest’s young directors. A director is like an alchemist who writes his vision of the world…”.Mattotti will also be the special guest of a programme dedicated to him. He will talk about his works, recalling forty years of career and revealing some of the secrets hidden behind his art.
Lorenzo Mattotti was a member of the Bologna collective “Valvoline”, that revolutionized the Italian comic strip with the pages of “Alter Alter”. In the latter Mattotti published some of the works that made him famous, such as Il Signor Spartaco(1982) and Fuochi (1984). Always in close contact with the world of cinema, he is the author of the beautiful drawings that connect the episodes of the collective film Eros, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven Soderbergh and Wong War-wai. Then he worked on Enzo D’Alo’s Pinocchio(2012), enriching it with his unique style. Although Mattotti has been living in Paris for many years, he maintains a special bond with the city of Venice, where he attended university. In fact, the author dedicated his wonderful graphic novel Venice. Scavando nell’acqua(2011) to the city. His talent is now recognized worldwide, as shown by the several international collaborations, including those with The New Yorker, Le Mond and the Festival of Cannes, for which he made the poster in the year 2000. His latest graphic novel is Ghirlanda(2017).
The announcement of the collaboration with such an important international author inaugurates the new edition of the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival, that is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The project was born in 2011 thanks the idea of the artistic and organizational director Roberta Novielli, who wanted to found the first festival in Europe entirely conceived, organized and managed by a university. Ten years later we can say that her project has been a success: the festival has gained more and more relevance amongst the university’s activities, involving thousands of students in different roles. Their enthusiasm and freshness animate the festival’s historic Auditorium during the four-days event. During its ten years of life, the Short has also become an important international showcase for young directors. In fact, over 3017 short films have been submitted from the best cinema schools of 111 different countries, in order to take part to the pre-selection. 30 movies will be selected among them to take part to the International Competition, the main event of the festival together with special programmes, masterclass, tributes and meetings with the authors.
Two parallel competitions will take place alongside with the main one. The Music Video International Competition, currently in its fourth edition, will collect the ten best music videos made by students of Italian and International universities or film schools. At the same time, the historic collaboration with the Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation and the related Olga Brunner Levi Prize has been renewed for the seventh year. High school students from all over the world are asked to create a short film focused on the themes of music and women, in order to celebrate the great Venetian patron. Eight films in competition, coming from as many countries.
The full program will be revealed by the artistic and organizational director Roberta Novielli during the press conference on March 10th at 12.00 in Ca’Bottacin, Venice.
