Jury Member 2022

Francesco Montagner is a documentary filmmaker and lecture in directing. Born in ’89, he studied documentary directing at the renowned Prague film school, FAMU, in the Czech Republic. Since 2017, he has been working at FAMU International as a support teacher for the APP (Academy Preparation Program) directing workshop and he also leads the course “Tools of Documentary Directing 1 and 2”.

Animata resistenza (2014) is his first documentary feature film as co-director and producer. The movie premiered at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, where it was awarded with the Venezia Classici Prize for the best documentary on cinema. It was also awarded nine times in as many Italian festivals. Animata resistenza is distributed nationwide as part of the “Nuvole, mani” boxset published by Minimum fax, and on the SKY ART channel.

Brotherhood (2021) is his second work, winner of the Golden Leopard – Filmmakers of the Present at the 74th Locarno Film Festival. The film was presented at more than 20 international festivals, winning numerous awards. For this new project, Montagner has chosen to use photography in a totally different way from the one we find in documentaries, trying to convey poetic settings that could resemble what we define as “magic realism”. The director has chosen to show some extracts from his latest film Brotherhood at the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival.

BROTHERHOOD (2021)

Brotherhood is the story of three Bosnian brothers, Jabir, Usama and Useir, who were born into a family of shepherds and grew up in the shadow of their father, a radical Islamic preacher, Ibraim. When their father is sentenced to two years in prison as a result of his terrorist activity, Jabir, Usama and Useir’s lives change dramatically. They will experience their freedom for the first time in the difficult transition from boyhood to adulthood.
