The Pasinetti Video Contest has now reached its 16th edition and once again is focused on Venice, its history and tradition, without neglecting telling about present life and future perspectives. The 2018 edition of the festival deliberately took place in different parts of the city, (Cinema House, Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the Auditorium of the Guggenheim High School), a choice meant to make the city participate, alive and real. Venice is therefore the subject matter of one section of the prize, which summarizes the linking thread of all the sections: the right to live in a welcoming city, where dialogue becomes the tool for knowledge, where diversity is richness, where friendly relationships build up strong ties among people. Thanks to Daniela Manzolli’s intuition, this year a new section has been introduced, entirely dedicated to the concept of “diversity” as a social, cultural and environmental value.
The sections are as many as the interesting and effective collaborations that give life to the prize. Music videos once again have a central role, always addressed to the world of the young. Schools play an important role with the many initiatives intended for the students: the realization of animated GIFs, and the prize for the best booktrailer named after Bruno Rosada, events where middle and high school students act as participants. We cannot but mention the M. Guggenheim artistic High School, whose history is deeply intertwined with that of the Pasinetti Prize, or the recent twinning with G. Valle artistic High School in Padua, whose students set up a collaboration with a group of students from the Multimedia and Graphic High School. Our special thanks go to students Giada Marchiori, Stefano Artusi, Aurora Marian and Giulia Brigato.
The municipality of Venice, Murano and Burano have always contributed to the initiative and each year they award a prize to the video that better reproduces the beauty and fragility of their city, as well as the dangers that are putting Venice in peril and the wish to overcome them.
The festival, chaired by Anna Ponti, was also enriched by the collaborations set up over the years with Confartigianato, Coop Adriatica, Hard Rock Cafè, La gondola photographic club, TGS Eurogroup, Cerchidonda and the giury guided by Carlo Montanaro and composed by: Manfredo Manfroi, Daniela Bartoletti, Elena Cardillo, Neda Furlan, Marco Paladini e Donatella Venitimiglia.
We wish to thank the authors and collaborators, as well as all the people that have contributed in any way to the successful outcome of the Video Contest over the years. Cinema is intended to create emotions and, sometimes, to brighten up the lives of those who feel down: this has been the project and objective of the Pasinetti Video Contest in the last 16 years.
The presentation of videos will be a chance to introduce the new Regulations of the 16th edition, which also this yearwill be directed by Michela Nardin and curated by Daniela Manzolli.

Un uomo chiamato Toni – A man named Toni
Director: Marta Pasqualini
2’
Marta Pasqualini is inspired by scraps of barks and sprouts to introduce Toni Zuccheri’s creativity, an architect and “craftsman” whose skillful guidance inspired the Murano Glass Masters to create extraordinary artifacts whose beauty was only partly due to nature. What comes out from A man named Toni, enriched in the narration by Ugo Pagliai’s voice reading a poem by Nanni Cagnone. It is not a mere illustration of defined shapes but the tension of the moment of the project, when mind becomes sign, entrusting the pencil the arrangement of what will be shaped by the fire in the kiln, the manifacture of an emotion.
Premio per la Fotografia e Premio sezione “Documentario e Documentazione” – Prize for Photography section and Prize for the section “Documentary and Investigation”
La Giornata – The day
Director: Pippo Mezzapesa
11’
Within the works presented in the new section “Documentary and Investigation” appearing in this year’s edition, we are pleased to present the prize awarded to Pippo Mezzapesa, who has also won the Best Photograph7y Award. His story tells about the tragic end of Paola Clemente, an Apulian day labourer, who had died of hardship while working under the sun in some fields in southern Italy. The story is disclosed through the words which had emerged from the judicial acts filed against the corporal organization that was exploiting Paola and from the words of the other women that daily travelled on her same bus. This dramatic theme is also well completed by a strong photographic impact: the author chooses dark tones, making an exceptional l use of light and deciding on the non-rhetorical effectiveness of the close up. All these components convey a message of great sorrow and social drama.

Come una palla di neve all’inferno – Like a snowball in hell
Director: Adriano Devita
3’17’’
Cruise ships symbolize the spectacular way of thinking that knows no limits. Dimensions should be inexorably growing, regardless of the surrounding environment. However, the city of Venice does have many limitations and cannot expand. The encounter between ships and Venice becomes a cultural clash, a dispute between different cultures. On one side we have the endless growth, on the other a sustainable balance that needs to be preserved. Long term expectation inevitably contrast with the rhythm of Venice daily life, whose values need to be passed on to future generations.
In 1970 Gregory Bateson wrote “As you arrogate all mind to yourself, you will see the world around you as mindless and therefore not entitled to moral or ethical consideration. The environment will seem to be yours to exploit. Your survival unit will be you and your folks or conspecifics against the environment of other social units, other races and the brutes and vegetables. If this is your estimate of your relation to nature and you have an advanced technology, your likelihood of survival will be that of a snowball in hell.” (in Form, substance and difference)

Maladie
Directors: Santa de Santis – Alessandro d’Ambrosi
3’57’’
Who has never experienced pain after the end of a brief but intense love story, one that can never been forgotten? One which leaves its mark? The first love, the pure and universal one from childhood when we still believe in the incredible and we are ready to open up to the unknown, without experiencing the arid concerns of adults? Who has never tried to find a way not to be forgotten, maybe ensuring memory to a given object,, or to sounds and perfumes of fairy places which have witnessed such love? Maladie is all of this: a candid encounter, drops of intrigued affinity in the sea of human distrust, melancholic detachment and nostalgia for a future that could have been but has not been and, in a sense, in a breath that has probably already passed…
