A special program of this year’s Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival is devoted to showing a certain number of screenings of the works by Aug & Ohr Medien, a dynamic Berlin-based film agency founded in 2011.
Over the last three years this young German company has produced and distributed a a remarkable range of short films and the audience will be able to encounter the various creative possibilities of a unique medium.
In the selection of animated and live-action films that will be shown, we can experience both undemanding and serious tones, ironic humour and moral issues, an associative imagery accompanied by a documentary style, in a variety of works by young directors between the age of 20 and 30.
The ultimate goal of any good short movie is to convey an idea, may this be an old German fairy-tale put into new aesthetics, as in Das Kalte Herz, or present modern aspects of reality, as those hinted at in the parody of social networks Steffi Gefallt Das, or outline the questions on ethics posed by Kilometer, or show the abandonment of all restraints in the swimming pool orgy of Cold Star. The time needed to express this idea may vary, from the four minutes of the illustrated poem Qualen to the half hour of Das kalte Herz.
Sometimes the messages of these small works of art deeply rely on words, German or English, in other cases there is a deliberate decision not to use any language and concentrate on images, like the meditation on consciousness and identity that is Alter Ego. During the festival Aug & Ohr Medien wishes to distribute some of the most successful German short films; Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival 2014 is the perfect occasion to present nine of their expressive movies, which are the most representatives of their wide-ranging output. Indeed, Aug & Ohr Medien has supervised over 140 films which have won numerous awards, e.g. the German Short Film Award, the Student Academy Award, the Short Tiger Award, the Murnau Short Film Award, First Steps, and the German Editing Award.
