A special Program by Michele Fadda
It is often arbitrary, in the perspective of a director career, to give too much prominence to the production outside the corpus of his official works, perhaps constituted by short films or documentaries. The case of Robert Altman, however, is different. A recognition of his shorts and medium length movies is necessary, because for the great New Hollywood’s filmmaker the “short form” is nothing but the fundamental plug in the construction of a complex and manifold world. As the original title of America today reminds us, the massive choral fresco of the American reality proposed by Altman is basically composed by short cuts, small loose cannons of a life always to be reorganized, in an original way, beyond the preconceived and more discounted schemes.
