Thankamma
INSTITUTE: K.R. Narayanan National Film Institute of Kerala
YEAR: 2016
LANGUAGE: Malayalam (Indian language)
PLOT: The spontaneity of the pictures, of the sounds, and especially the natural ones, reflects the simplicity of the modest life of Thankamma, an eighty-year-old ferry-woman. The ship she steers is the central element of this short movie: it is the one and only source of income and sustainment of the protagonist and it’s also been the basis of her existence since she was a child. Through her dialogues, we discover a fragile and suffering conscious personality, but never turned off by poverty, strengthened by a great fortitude and a political activism which supports her social class.
