A workshop by Davide Giurlando
Following the success of the previous editions, Davide Giurlando is back on the stage of the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival for the fifth appointment with Anymation, three days of workshop on international animation, a project born in 2012. The focus will be on the analysis of the “poetess of chaos of contemporary life”, the role animation played for years, symbol of neurosis of images, connected to the strain of modern life, which cinema could not always represent in such a desecrating, crazy and compulsive way. The basis of this research is the creative contribution taken from the world of advertisement and its power of involving and stimulating senses, even in subconscious dimensions, that is the case of political propaganda.
An array of names and films are shown on the screen of Auditorium Santa Margherita: from Bruno Bozzetto (one of the big names of the last edition) to the Zagreb Animators School, born in the 1950s and author of short films about consumerism and artificial desires that carry men to social alienation. A bombing of politically unfair images, involving even Donald Duck as a Nazi in Der Fuherer’s Face (by Jack Kinney, 1943); The Flinstones of the 1960s buying Winston cigarettes; Ronald McDonald and Michelin Man in Logorama (François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, 2009 – winner of an Oscar Prize in 2010). All of this is an introduction of fake and technological universes represented in consecutive feature films, such as Wreck-It Ralph (2012) and the upcoming The Emoji Movie (2017), about the smileys we type every day when using WhatsApp.
